Cypress High School’s dance program had its fall dance show, “Born Again,” on Thursday, November 20th, at Kennedy Performing Arts Center. Students had the opportunity to express themselves through exciting songs, including “Born This Way,” “Born Again,” “Telephone,” “My Way,” and “Dreams.”
Each show, students either feel nervous or excited about the dances they’re performing. This year, dancers were looking forward to many things in the fall show. Junior Valentina Velasquez expressed, “I like seeing everyone from the other classes and seeing how they have evolved as a dancer from August up until November. I want to see their dances, and I also want to see their costumes.” Freshman Presley Faulk said, “Probably getting to see other class dances and then being able to be with my friends.” Sophomore Amelia Dinh added, “I’m most excited to see how the audience reacts to everything and how we dance on stage.”
This performance allowed many students to perform on a big stage, but beyond the stage lights and performing in front of an audience, there are many lessons taught within the dance room that dancers can take with them. Dance teacher, Mrs. Kerri Fenton, explained, “I hope they take self-confidence, self-awareness, all the 5Cs, teamwork, and just a positive experience that they had a nice time.”
To put on a dance show, each class must work together as a team to ensure that each routine is at its best. Velasquez said, “I just love how communicative we are. But, especially in advanced dance, there’s a certain amount of pressure that’s there, but then the people that are there make it easier.” Faulk stated, “I like how close everyone is. In our class, everyone knows each other, and even though we have different friend groups, we’re still really cohesive as a class.” Dinh shared, ”I like how everyone works hard to help each other improve, like helpful criticism, so our class could do better as a whole.”
Every dance show is unique in its own way, Mrs. Fenton said this show would be described as “Amazing, incredible, and professional.” This show allowed students to make new memories and gain a new experience performing with their class.
