Valentine’s Day is a day about love and appreciation, but it is also a day when gifts can go very wrong. While some students believe there are clear examples of bad Valentine’s gifts, others argue that there is no such thing. Among the students/staff, opinion is pretty split. For some, the worst Valentine’s gift is simply nothing.

Senior Avemaria Moreno and Campus Safety Aide, Laura Koboski, both agree that receiving nothing is the worst gift of all. To them, Valentine’s Day is about at least making some kind of effort. In contrast, Chemistry Teacher Brian Ramirez argues that “There really is no worst Valentine’s gift.” He says that the intention matters more than the gift itself. The meaning and thought put into any gift matter more.

Others believe inconsiderate gifts are the biggest letdown. Senior Olivia Ju says being taken out to a least-favorite restaurant is worse than no gift at all. Ju argues that this shows “lack of attention” and that her preferences were ignored. History teacher Brandon Perez adds that flowers are a bad gift because they eventually die, making them feel wasteful rather than meaningful.
In the end, opinions on gifts vary widely among the students, however these different opinions prove that there is no single bad gift on Valentines day.
