The weather is getting colder, rain is falling, and the Girl’s soccer team is ready to play against other schools after the previous season ended with a record of 3-9-5. The girl’s soccer coach, Nicole Woiemberghe, feels confident about the upcoming season. Something that she looks forward to in the season is kicking the season off, saying, “I’m looking forward to coming back and playing home games at night, especially the league season. It’s an exciting atmosphere, and playing under the lights has been really exciting. We have a good returning class. We have Jasmine Roberts, who has been on Varsity all four years, and she’s a great leader, but we have a good group coming back.”
Woiemberghe also noted the strong point of the team is a very strong defense. She said, “We have a very strong defense. We have two very talented keepers and a good back line. Now this year’s getting the offense involved and getting some goals, because last year we were very good defensively, but now we need to add the missing piece of scoring goals.”
To prepare for the upcoming season, Nicole Woiemberghe’s strategy to dominate has several points. She explained, “We’ve increased our fitness, and done a lot of offensive positioning and tactical stuff just because we want to be a bit more creative and providing offensive opportunities. So we’ve been working really hard on the off season, just those things, fitness, tactically, and offensively, just putting all the pieces together so we’re more competitive, and have a stronger season this coming up.”
Lily Asham, a junior on the team, said that the team “[Works] on a lot of shooting and scrimmaging,” in addition to conditions and she has been communicating and making memories with the people that she loves, as well as working hard. Going forward, it is a possibility for her to continue playing soccer in college, in the case of a scholarship she definitely would.
As a whole, the team has been working hard on the off season, meeting as early as 6:30 AM during the week. All the good luck to our girl’s soccer team!
