As second quarter begins, Cypress students are preparing for the new Girl’s Wrestling season. Junior Alice Kim is the captain this year and is in her third year since she began wrestling. “Ever since my first match, I’ve grown a lot,” she said. “Don’t be afraid of how there are other individuals that have more experience than you. I think wrestling has so many different ways you can win a match and anything’s possible.”
“My favorite part of wrestling is how our team bonds with each other,” said freshman Nancy Nguyen. “You have people to support you… They’re also really friendly.”
“I am really looking forward to watching the girls improve and grow as both people and wrestlers,” commented assistant coach Crystal Zamarripa. “Wrestling will challenge you physically, mentally, and emotionally but it will shape you into a very driven and disciplined person.”
“I’ve gotten stronger,” said junior Bella Lyres, another member of Girl’s Wrestling, emphasizing the importance of mentality and mindset while wrestling. “Just do your best and put yourself out there. Do all you can do because it’s all going to be worth it in the end.”
It is freshman Ava Uptergrove’s first year doing wrestling, but was unfortunately injured before the season started. “I haven’t been able to practice with my team, but I love how determined they are. They’ve shown lots of resilience… Seeing how dedicated my team is and just the overall support they give each other only makes me want to try harder, so I hope to be back soon.”
The girl’s wrestling team is working very hard, strengthening their bonds, and looking forward to a great season.
