As each year comes to an end, there’s always excitement in the air. Whether it’s lighting up diyas (a traditional oil lamp) to celebrate Diwali or even putting up a Christmas tree with your loved ones, people celebrate these holidays differently. But what are Diwali and Christmas, and how do students celebrate them?
Diwali, the ‘Festival of Lights,’ is a Hindu celebration that celebrates light over dark. This holiday usually falls in October or November and is celebrated by lighting up diyas, setting off fireworks, creating beautiful rangoli designs (traditional Indian art that is created with different patterns on the floor), decorating the house with lights, and exchanging sweets. Not only is Diwali celebrated in India, but it is also celebrated by many Indians worldwide. As October and November approach each year, many people look forward to dressing up in new outfits to celebrate the season.
Christmas is a cherished tradition that brings immense excitement to people during the holiday season. Celebrations include decorating cookies, putting up Christmas trees, exchanging gifts, decorating with Christmas lights, and spending time with friends and family. Each year, people look forward to partaking in these festive traditions to remind them what these holidays are all about.
Students here at Cypress have different ways to celebrate these holidays. Sophomore Yashika Patel said, “One way I celebrate Diwali is by hanging out with my family, and we set up lights in our house and do Rangoli art.” Senior Eshani Banerjee added, “I celebrate Diwali with my family by lighting up a bunch of diyas at the entrance of our house and drawing a rangoli. And then we put on a bunch of religious music.” Sophomore Derek Donor explained, “My favorite part about Christmas has to be the weather and the decor, and the fact that almost everyone seems to be joyful. That’s something I feel everyone is connecting with.” Sophomore Meiling Castillo shared, “My favorite part of celebrating Christmas is getting with the family and opening gifts, and I just like the vibes of it, the music, watching Christmas movies, and eating a bunch of food.”
As each year comes to a close, students have exciting ways to celebrate with their friends and family and connect with their culture to ensure their traditions stay alive in various ways.
