The Cypress High School Girls Tennis team started the new season with a competitive 2-2 varsity record, while junior varsity remains undefeated with 3-0.
Tennis Coach Joseph Paul emphasizes the importance of the mindset players bring to the courts, rather than the results. “The goal for tennis this year is for the girls at the end of the season to have no regrets for how they played, for the effort they put in, and for the grades that they have in their classes,” Paul said, “The team is supposed to motivate one another, and I want the girls to have their own desire to win.”
Captains Ashley Park and Izampella Barmpara Gavra follow these values as they lead the team in their final year. The athletes expressed how they want to spend their final year on the courts. “I don’t really have anything to lose, and I can just spend my last year giving it my all,” stated Park. On the other hand, Gavra said, “I want to stay undefeated and have fun, since it’s our final year.”
Varsity player Ashlynn Hwang described the sport as more than just tennis balls and rackets. “Joining the tennis team gave me a sense of community I had never experienced before,” she said. The varsity players have a lot of convictions and high hopes for the season. “We’re trying to power through and continue to show our best to really try to take home CIF.”
