Over 900 students from 40 local high schools participated in the Mock Trial program this year. Students representing Cypress High School in the mock trial powered through Rounds 1 and 2, but unfortunately did not advance to the final round in Los Angeles.
In a mock trial, participants replicate real-life courtroom actions, using role-play for educational purposes. It encourages students to practice public speaking, build advocacy skills, and develop knowledge regarding legal processes. Applying case materials, etiquette, and argumentation, students are judged based on the strength of their performance.
Before heading to the Santa Ana Courthouse for Mock Trial, students must dress formally and be prepared to project their voices and arguments.
Rishika Sharma, a junior at Cypress High School and one of the team captains on the mock trial team said, “I joined the mock trial team because I have had a long-term interest in law.” Since freshman year, Sharma has attempted to form a mock trial team at school and succeeded after two years. She received the help of a teacher coach with experience leading mock trials at Cypress, Ms. Christensen, and a practicing attorney, Mr. Billwinder to rebuild the mock trial team.
April Kim, a junior at Cypress High School and one of the team captains on the mock trial team said, “We adjusted to the environment and bonded together faster than I expected. It was exciting to attend all the competitions and be in a real-life courtroom setting.” After participating in the mock trial, Kim is now considering a career in law. “I want to thank Ms. Christensen and Mr. Billwinder for making this all possible.”
Aya Albayati, a junior at Cypress High School said, “We have not competed for a long time and therefore need to hold stronger teamwork.” From 6 to 9 pm, the Cypress mock trial team practices for every upcoming event. “My favorite part of the mock trial is the adrenaline that comes from trying to make a better point than the opposing team.”
Katarina Marngopoulos, a junior at Cypress High School, highlighted the improvements she has made participating as a member of the mock trial team. “A lot of the times there would be an objection and I would have to think on my feet, to defend myself and my client.” Adapting quickly under pressure routinely has challenged her critical thinking while strengthening her public speaking skills.
The Cypress High School mock trial team has consistently demonstrated commitment and professionalism. Despite the long journey, the Cypress High School mock trial team has invested their time into hours of preparation, developing their research skills and strategic planning to counter the opposing team. They are determined and ready to return next year to secure their place in the finals.
