At home, the girls’ Flag Football game on Wednesday, October 1st, resulted in a win against Esperanza, with a close score of 28-19 from the varsity team. These ladies pushed it to their all, from their last game with Esperanza, which they lost 7-13.
Mackenzie McCowan, a freshman just beginning her career, was inspired to play by her parents, and she is a member of the FS team. She hopes to get better and stated, “It takes individual people to make a good team,” because Flag Football is a team sport, you can’t make people better if they do not try individually, and this shows our team here at Cypress. They are a community and get each other farther than Flag Football. As of this season, they have had their ups and downs, but continue to support one another no matter what.

Ava Coelho, an 11th grader and Varsity player for Flag Football. She joined out of curiosity and the enjoyment of watching her brother and cousins play when she was younger, and began to play schoolwise in eighth grade at a Friday Night Live game. She loves this sport throughout the hardships of last season, because not only was it hard, but it was also rewarding to watch the team get stronger and stronger. By this season, it has become more difficult for her, but she has also worked harder. It taught her more about the game and the new rules that were introduced this year, and, of course, brought her closer to her peers. She states that, “The community is very welcoming, and always full of laughter and good times.” Not only do they have those moments, but they also work hard together as a team to mark down plays.
Audrey Tran, a freshman who plays running back and defensive back for the Girls FS Flag Football team, started in 5th Grade and has loved it ever since. She strives to hit the big leagues and eventually play in college. But as of right now, she is learning the tactics of the game; she states that “We all help each other out, and are all slowly learning how to work together.” She explains that there are significant differences in levels, and how this shows that different players make up a better team. It is not just the members that are unique to her, but also her coach. “He takes the time to explain things to us,” really shows his commitment to the teams in such a short time of getting to know them. Tran describes him as a fun, patient, and understanding teacher who treats everyone fairly; that is who we need as a coach.
