This year’s Track and Field season has started off strong with athletes in the categories of distance runners, throwers, hurdlers, sprinters, and jumpers.
There are many coaches in charge of each event, starting with Head Coach John Eyman, and followed by Distance Coaches are Matthew Tweed and Brooke Montgomery, Throwing Coach Michael Cobleigh, Hurdles Coach Karen Frank-Johnson, Sprinters Coach Morgan Rose, Long-jump and High-jump Coach Dan Falt, and finally Pole Vault Coach Clint Jameson.
With the new track finished, the team is more rigorous and harder at work than ever. Girls Distance Captain senior Evonne Lam said it has motivated her “to go to practice, because of how beautiful our facility is. It has made practice more efficient, since we used to have to go to Cypress College or Lexington Junior High in the past years.”
The track team is hard at work, practicing every day after school and on Saturdays, rain or shine. So far, they have competed at the Mater Dei invitational meet. Invitational meets are not necessarily scored to win, but rather mark the kickoff of the track season. League meets, on the other hand, are the more competitive meets that track trains to bring home a win (in each category) as a team. St. Paul is the next upcoming invitational, followed by Esperanza, this season’s first league meet.
As a Mid-Distance Sprinter, senior Ashlynn Lim says “I look forward to participating in the meets and the sport itself.” For people who are interested in track, she says that track is an intensive sport that should be fun to be a part of, because it is time-consuming and requires care and effort.
Cypress High School’s track team embodies the phrase “work hard, play hard” as they truly let themselves enjoy the sport and the effort they put into it each day. Our team will continue to strive for excellence as they prepare for the upcoming meets. To finish off the season strong, Cypress has set their sights on qualifying to participate in League, CIF, and Orange County Championships.
