The Centurion athletes started off the year strong, but one exceptional basketball player, and one phenomenal manager deserve the titles of January 2024’s Boy’s Athletes of the Month.
The Centurion Spotlight has chosen these athletes in recognition of their hard work and dedication to their sport. As excellent team players and outstanding leaders, these boys and girls have shown outstanding leadership during their games and have been outstanding role models for their teammates.
Senior Boys Basketball Team Manager Adam Gutierrez, suited up on January 26th to face our rivals Kennedy High, “The School Down the Street.” Gutierrez has been the Centurion’s manager for three years. In January, Gutierrez made the Senior Night crowd go wild when he sank a 3-pointer during the game. Even fans of the other team stood to applaud him.
“I was quite nervous, but towards the middle of the game, I felt a lot better,” he said. He loves having fun with the guys, and his favorite memory was when they went to the Crypto.com Arena and they let him shoot.
Sophomore Ryan Gov, varsity point guard, started his basketball career when his parents put him in a small rec league in elementary school. The Centurions played Crean Lutheran on January 17th, and it was a big game from Gov. “It was a really up-tempo game; they have 33 straight league games, and we really felt as if we needed to win that game.”
These boys have been recognized for their performance and dedication to their team, as well as their leadership and contribution to the success of their team.
