What’s Popping
April 22, 2021
The year of 2021 has been a sort of strange year for many people. Many things have changed because of the coronavirus, but one thing that hasn’t changed is the power of music. Many artists have come out with the hottest tracks of their career and then others are making your ears bleed. Here are the top 10 songs that are popping so far right now. But the real question is, are they popping to you?
1.) “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” by Lil Nas X; this song has had many complications ever since it came out yet it’s number one on today’s list. Viewer discretion is advised if you’re going to watch the music video. With a hundred million viewers this music video has got everyone talking. Dealing with the topic hell and the devil in the music video, it causes some people to dislike it while others enjoyed the song.
2.) “Peaches” by Justin Bieber Featuring Daniel Caesar and Giveon; many ‘Belieber’ fans have enjoyed all of Bieber’s new album and the one song that has topped off is Peaches. What’s better than the vibe of the song is the fact that he wrote this song for his wife Hailey Bieber because of all the love he has for her. At multiple points within the hit track, he makes references to a love interest, and considering Hailey is the only woman in his life, those pieces just fall together.
3.) “Leave the Door Open” by Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak; Mars and Paak duet together on the pre-chorus. The pair are singing about a love interest they want to take things to another level with. This song has a slow and melodic tone that leaves one in a more romantic mood.
4.) “Up” by Cardi B; many people may know this song because it’s mentioned in the popular social media app, Tik Tok. Many viewers have created videos with this song which is what caused the song to skyrocket in the first place. Viewer discretion is advised.
5.) “Driver’s License” by Olivia Rodrigo; when this music video was released everyone went crazy over the 17-year old’s song. On Tik Tok, everyone is screaming their lungs out singing to this song. Many like to think Rodrigo wrote this song about Joshua Bassett, another High School Musical the Musical Series star. After their on-screen appearance together many fans thought they were dating in real life.
6.) “Save Your Tears” by ‘The Weekend’; “Save Your Tears” captures The Weeknd’s longing for Bella Hadid after seeing her out and his regrets over breaking her heart. This run-in was likely the one reported in tabloids last summer: The two ran into each other at Catch One nightclub after their breakup in August 2019, and Hadid left minutes after The Weeknd arrived. The Weeknd acknowledges Hadid’s refusal to give The Weeknd her attention is probably because he hurt her the way another ex—Gomez, perhaps, who he sang extensively about in his last EP My Dear Melancholy—did him (“I broke your heart like someone did to mine / And now you won’t love me for a second time.”)
7.) “Levitating” by Dua Lipa Featuring DaBaby; This pop song is a bop that many people have enjoyed. It screams “dance party.” It’s pretty obvious by the music video alone ‘Levitating’ is about something we can only reminisce from our pre-pandemic lives; letting go on the dance floor – and of course locking eyes with a certain someone at the same time.
8.) “Blinding Lights” by ‘The Weekend’; Specifically, the mega-hit “Blinding Lights,” from his 2020 album After Hours points to a love that got away. And if we take a quick peek at his dating history, it’s apparent the R&B singer—born Abel Makkonen Tesfaye—may be subtly referring to his on-again, off-again relationship with model Bella Hadid. He seems to have a couple of songs that could be about her…
9.) “Mood” by 24KGolden Featuring Iann Dior; This is another song that you may know from Tik Tok due to the videos created with it. They question their stormy relationship with women who seem indecisive when it comes to their feelings. So they wrote a song about it.
10.) “What You Know About Love” by Pop Smoke; Yet again, we have another popular Tik Tok song that also has a dance to it. This song is trending in the top ten because of Tik Tok and many of the Tik Tok stars who danced to it. It’s self-explanatory if you look up the lyrics (viewer discretion advised).
With those top ten trending songs, there may be some that are your favorites and others that you wish would not be songs. Like them or not, they are what are popping right now, but who knows? Maybe your favorite artist will come out with a hot track tomorrow?
