Gabriella Esparza is the new 11th grade counselor at Cypress High School. A counselor’s role is to support students in academics, along with social and emotional situations.
“I became a counselor because I am a first generation student and I want to encourage and support students through their academic journeys,” Esparza said. Her favorite part of the job is working with students preparing for college, looking at different careers, and really doing the research to make sure they have all they need to succeed.
She says her favorite memories come from graduation time. “It’s nice to see students make it through the graduation and get their diploma,” Esparza said. She makes sure that students not only graduate, but are prepared with a plan for what they want to do next. Esparza says the counseling job isn’t too tricky. “I don’t think I can say there’s a harder part of it. It’s not really difficult, you know, it’s just, I love my job. Overall, it’s nice,” Esparza remarked.
Esparza wants to let students know she can help. “I’d like to let students know that I’m here for them. If you ever need anything, feel free to stop by the counselling office and, if it’s urgent, ask to see Ms. Esparza. But if you just have any questions, you just want to meet, talk about college or anything regarding academics, you can just scan the QR code,” Esparza said.
