This year’s Cypress High School’s annual Best Buddies Prom, is being held at the Cypress Senior Center on Friday, May 2. This dance has been a resounding success in the previous years. The inclusive event can be easily accessed with a $10 ticket, which can be bought at the door or anytime starting April 21 from Club Adviser Mrs. Whiting in room 108. Last year’s prom provided a welcoming and sensory-friendly environment for students with and without disabilities, exceeding expectations and setting a high bar for future events.
Building on the legacy of a previous teacher here at Cypress, Mrs. Kathy Lewis, “Mini Prom,” has transformed into a Best Buddies student-led vibrant celebration that emphasizes the inclusion of all students. “We try to be as inclusive as possible and welcome all CHS students to come. Students don’t have to be a club member if you want to join,” said Whiting.

This prom is planned mostly by the Best Buddies Club and help is provided by Whiting and some other staff. Every year, a theme is decided by the board members of the club; this year’s chosen theme is Dress to Impress. The prom is usually located at the Cypress Community Center or at the Cypress Senior Center. Throughout the school year to help make the prom happen, the club will have fundraisers such as St. Patrick’s Day Grams, movie nights, T-shirt sales, and hosting holiday parties. “I’m very excited for the theme of best buddies proms, I hope to see everyone from Best Buddies have fun,” said club vice-president Isaac Kang.
“The idea behind the event is to have an opportunity for our students with disabilities to participate in a school dance with an environment that’s comfortable and fun,” emphasized Whiting. Beyond sensory adjustments, Best Buddies Prom will provide food and drinks to students who attend. The implementation of adjusted lighting, carefully managed music levels, and a more intimate setting helps create a relaxed atmosphere that allows everyone attending to fully engage with the festivities. This thoughtful attention to detail speaks volumes about the club’s dedication to ensuring that everyone is authentically included.
“Best Buddies Prom is a really fun event every year for our club… our big final hurrah for the school year,” said Whiting. “It’s a fun, entertaining night for people to join in and I invite all my friends,” said Best Buddies Buddy Director, Matthew Lucero.
