The Track and Field season includes multiple events like; sprinters, distance runners, hurdlers, jumpers, and throwers.
Coaches include Head Track and Field Coach John Eyman, Sprinters Coach Morgan Rose, Distance Coaches Matthew Tweed, and Brooke Montgomery, Hurdlers Coach Karen Frank-Johnson, Long-jump and High-jump Coach Dan Falt, and Throwing Coach Michael Cobleigh.
With a new track being built, Coach Eyman has said for practices, “We have been going to various locations… and doing many things here at Cypress High School. So, just do the best we can to proceed with the construction.”
While having fun, the track team practices hard to win as many meets as possible. Competing in Empire League, the Cypress Track and Field team has competed in three invitationals with Mater Dei and Edison, St. Paul, and Triton. They also competed in a quad meet with John Glenn, La Habra, and Bellflower as well as a tri-meet with Cal High and El Monte. The track team has also competed in a dual meet with Crean Lutheran.
As a high jumper, senior Marissa Krebs advises athletes to, “always give it your all and have fun.” Experience is at play when it comes to new athletes or old athletes, junior Hector Castellanos said, “listen to your coaches and anyone who has a lot of experience because they have so much knowledge of the sport and they can help you pursue the sport when you need it.”
Something that makes the track team here at Cypress High School stand out from other schools is that the athletes here like to work hard and have fun. Later into the season, Cypress will be competing against other schools like Kennedy, Pacifica, will be a part of the Arcadia Invite, and Tustin. After all meets are completed, Cypress will be going to compete in Orange County Championships, League games, and CIF.
