At Cypress High School, students display their own personal style and make a statement in the halls. Different fashion styles are seen throughout campus, from trendy tops and low-rise jeans, to layered accessories, hoodies, graphic tees, and flowy skirts.

Senior Gurveen Sandhu said her personal fashion style changes depending on how she feels. “One day, I’ll wear a leather jacket, and another day, I’m wearing a cute flowery sweater,” she explained. Sandhu said that there are a lot of things that inspire her style and how she dresses. “I just want to look my best,” she commented. She explained that when she was younger, she was obsessed with the picture book series Fancy Nancy, written by Jane O’ Connor, and illustrated by Robin Preiss Glasser. “An essential for me is jewelry and especially earrings,” Sandhu said with a smile. “If I don’t have earrings on, it literally makes me go insane, and I feel incomplete…If I am wearing something that I feel cute in, then I feel good.” Sandhu’s favorite place to shop is Ross Dress for Less. She says that, “they have things for every kind of aesthetic and it’s also pretty cheap.”

Senior Julian Trujillo describes his personal fashion style as “relaxed.” His style impacts how he views himself, as well as how he views other people. Trujillo tries to resemble, “the people I see outside of school,” which inspires the way he dresses. For Trujillo, the pants serve as the essential of the outfit, and his favorite place to shop is the thrift store.

Junior Willow Criscuolo said her fashion sense is “unique and different.” She said that social media and trends are a big influence on the way she dresses. Criscuolo’s sense of style, “helps [her] feel better about [herself].” She says, “…Wearing whatever you’re comfortable in gives you self-confidence.” Criscuolo listed some of her favorite places to shop, which include Hollister, Aritzia, Brandy Melville, Free People, and Levi’s.

Sophomore Jenettsy Guerrero is inspired by fashion from the 60s and 70s. She said, “I really enjoy older things, but I also throw my sort of mix in there.” Guerrero’s “whimsical” sense of style has developed over time. She says, “At first, I was made fun of. People would say I was weird for dressing the way I did, same with my family…At first it was a negative thing, but now I associate myself with people who have that same sort of fashion sense. It’s something that I’m known for now.” Guerrero usually gets her clothes from thrift stores, but also likes Old Navy for their inclusive jeans and their colors. The essential part of Guerrero’s outfits is jewelry. “I like antiques, so I usually get my rings there, my bangles, and then I wear a lot of necklaces,” she said. With a laugh, she joked, “I get told that every time I move, [people] can hear my bangles.” Guerrero takes inspiration from alternative fashion icons or models like Vivienne Westwood, Twiggy, Pattie Boyd, and Shelley Duvall.
